Trail of the Smugglers (Sentiero dei contrabbandieri) - Bozzi refuge

From the Tonale Pass the road is paved in the beginning, and later still suitable for cars that pass through the San Bartholomeo Hospice heading towards the Valbiolo farm at mt. 2250 of altitude.
Take Trail n. 11 which develops for about 50 minutes along a path that skirts the ski slope. From here onwards we'll be accompanied by continuous appearances of marmots observe us along our way. In the last 20 minutes, up to the “Smugglers'” Crest, the trail becomes narrower and more demanding. The name of the pass derives from the intense smuggling activity in the post war period which took place precisely here, along the paths that lead the Gavia Pass and into Switzerland. The Smugglers' Pass (Passo dei contrabbandieri) marks the southern border of the Stelvio National Park; from here one can observe some the peaks of the metamorphic Ortles-Cevedale group and from the opposite side the Adamello- Presanella group. Throughout the entire zone there are notable traces of the Great War, with numerous remains of trenches, tunnels and fortifications.
Continuing one descends for about 30 minutes along a steep trail to arrive at the Angelino Bozzi Refuge (2481) where we'll find a small museum dedicated to the fallen in the war. From here begin other paths towards the Ercavallo lakes and the Val del Montozzo, grandiose and of particularly beautiful. The return to the Tonale Pass is along the same trail.
